IFSC stands for Indian Financial System Code. It is an
11-digit alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies a bank branch that
participates in the electronic funds transfer system in India. The code is used
for transferring funds from one bank account to another within the country.
The first four characters of the IFSC code represent the
bank code, the next character is a reserved character for future use, and the
last six characters represent the branch code. For example, the IFSC code of
State Bank of India's Connaught Place branch in New Delhi is SBIN0000691. Here,
the first four characters 'SBIN' represent the bank code for State Bank of
India, the fifth character is a zero (0) for future use, and the last six
characters '000691' represent the branch code for Connaught Place branch.
IFSC codes are used by banks and financial
institutions to facilitate electronic funds transfer between accounts. It helps
to ensure that funds are transferred accurately and securely. It is also used
for various other purposes like online payments, NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS
transactions.
